That time when I did not like my body, I ignored the opinion of the whole nations: Armenia, Georgia, India, Africa, Thailand, Iran, Turkey, and all the Muslim countries. Millions of men in the world like stout women! Why? And why on our side of the planet there are so many educated people fighting with their own body in order to be closer to the lower limit of the norm? The major part of our society is eternally in process of losing weight, some people want to increase it. But the fact is that the most are dissatisfied with their bodies. And really, it is no matter how they look like actually.
I ask myself why there are so many complexes, body blaming and low self-evaluation. There are so many opportunities nowadays, does it mean that it is easy to make a mistake? Modern society does not have rigid fixation in a particular social group. You can always feel like a failure. Previously if you were born as a son of a miller — it was OK, your future was also clear. As for the present — the list of professions updates every year, there is no certainty. The American Dream: the poor worked hard and achieved all by himself. And if he did
not achieve -did he work hard? Is there too much trouble in the world today? Is there too much information and it is unclear whom to believe?
Or is the reason that in recent decades the structure of family has changed so much? It was patriarchal, then nuclear, and generally it is a diad of mother and child now. There is no clan support, no sense of stable identity, which is more denominated in traditional societies. Or is it just a different range of aesthetic values? Great proximity to nature, naturalness?
I can see the reasons for such a good attitude to the corpulence in more traditional societies:
— The cult of the mother. Fashion for thinness began at the same period as the contraceptives were invented. Previously, the main function of women was the childbearing. She was the wife and the mother, pregnant or breastfeeding. The corpulence of married women was a sign of the physiological health and the family welfare. In traditional societies there are still many children. 7−8 brothers and sisters do not surprise anyone. And the cult of mom is completely logical — she is the heroic women. And mothers of many children are often corpulent.
— The cult of male power. It is more archaic and constant distribution of family roles. A man in a traditional society is mainly a warrior, an earner. Firstly, it is good when the trophy is large. Secondly, he has an aggressive role. Warm, soft feminine body suppresses the aggression, emphasizes the difference of the sexes. It is important that a woman is ready to accept these energies, to calm a man. European women have forgotten how to do it.
— More structured society. There is no American dream now. Globally speaking, there is the fewer requirements — less neurosis — less emotional overeating. In Europe, the U.S., Russia, there are plenty of people who do not have excess weight, but they are dissatisfied with their body. And they are correcting it during the lifetime. It seems to me that the body and weight are not to blame. It is just a nesessity to legalize the inferiority complex and the fear of failure. A weight is an excellent cover. For everything.
— More predictable future. I think that fans of diets and healthy lifestyles often just trying to control their life and body. The outside world can not be controlled and it scares.
I tried to find some open studies about the difference of cultures: body image, social standards relatively to weight, sociological research. I hadn’t found yet. If there is something interesting — send me a link, please. And I am very interested in the opinion of people in other countries.
